Abstract

Inclusive higher education requires both social acceptance and institutional readiness to address the needs of students with disabilities. This study aimed to explore university students’ supportive and critical perceptions of institutional readiness for developing an inclusive campus. A descriptive-exploratory qualitative approach was employed involving 12 active students from Universitas Negeri Makassar who were selected purposively. Data were collected through two focus group discussions and analyzed using thematic analysis. The analysis generated three main themes: students’ understanding of an inclusive campus, support for inclusion as a form of equality, and concerns about institutional readiness for implementation. Across these themes, an integrative pattern emerged in which students’ support for inclusion coexisted with critical assessments of facility accessibility, lecturer readiness, learning processes, and institutional support. This pattern was conceptualized in this study as the Inclusion Readiness Gap, referring to the gap between acceptance of inclusion as a value and perceived institutional readiness to implement it. The findings suggest that social acceptance of inclusion needs to be accompanied by stronger institutional capacity to support inclusive higher education.
